Geocache Description:

A small cache near the General Lyon Cemetery in Phoenixville, CT.

General Nathaniel Lyon was the first Union General to die in the Civil War at the battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri at the age of 43. The monument in this cemetery is a tribute to his life. He was an 1841 graduate of the US Military Academy, and a veteran of the Seminole and Mexican Wars, and served at various posts on the frontier before being assigned to command the U.S. arsenal in St. Louis in 1861.

The monument is inscribed with his conquests on the South and West faces, the North shows his lifespan, and the East face that you see first is inscribed LYON. There is a bas-relief of General Lyon astride a horse, it's front right leg raised, in full-dress military uniform with epaulets and a sword, with his right arm raised high, holding a hat. There are Civil War era cannons that have fallen into the ground on the corners of the plot, and one in the center, facing east.

Regarding the stance of the horse. If a statue in a park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle.. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
