Tinfos - jejoms#4 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, send me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to unarchive the cache listing if it still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,
Cervis Venator

Geocache Description:

A cache located in Notodden, approximately 5 minutes drive from the nearest big road.

Tinnefossen (Tinne fall) was the starting point of the industrial adventure that gave birth to Notodden as a town early in the 1900s. Here, Sam Eyde got the power he needed to start Norsk Hydro a few hundred meters downstream.

Later, Tinfos Jernverk used the same falls to get power for their factory that gave work to many people in Notodden. This factory closed down in the 80s, but Tinfos and its former owners, the Holtas, still have an impact on the town. From near the cache you can see Notodden's new football stadium which was largely funded by Tinfos and former owner Kjetil Holta.

Today, the area around Tinnefossen is largely a tribute to Notoddens industrial past, with old buildings that among other things contain Telemark's county museum. You can also see an old timberpass that runs for miles upstream. Next to the football stadium you'll find Notodden's only indoor swimming pool, also payed for with Tinfos money.

The power from the falls is still very much in use - you'll have to be here after very heavy rains or during repairs to se the water running freely.

The cache is placed in the old dam which today is a venue for a few concerts a year. If you go hunting during one of these, you either have to pay or wait. Beyond that, it's open 24/7.

The cache is a small lock n'lock which can take coins and small travel bugs.
