Domeinbos Het Broek
Een mozaïek van bossen en vijvers in de alluviale vlakte van de Rupel.
Ooit was de Rupel een zeearm, die eeuw na eeuw sedimenten afzette in haar vallei. Door deze eeuwenlange veenafzettingen ontstonden dichte turflagen die zich ontwikkelden tot een 'broekbos'. Dit is een bosachtige vegetatie op laaggelegen drassig land dat nat blijft door opwellend grondwater (kwel) veroorzaakt door de druk van de nabij gelegen rivier de Rupel. Omdat het laaggelegen is, overstroomt het regelmatig en staat het 's winters vaak lange tijd onder water. De bodemsoort kan variëren van veengrond tot kleigrond. Ooit waren mammoeten, poolvossen, oerossen, wilde paarden en Siberische neushoorns hier thuis en gedurende eeuwen werden fossielen afgezet door sedimentatie. Teruggevonden beenderen van mamoeten en andere uitgestorven diersoorten kan je bezichtigen in het onthaalcentrum aan het Scheyvaertshof. Aan de rand van het Broek werd omstreeks 1870 een voorhistorisch paaldorp ontdekt. Het is nog altijd een nat gebied, dat op een paar zandruggen na, twee tot drie meter boven de zeespiegel uitsteekt, maar waar zich doorheen de tijd een verscheidenheid aan flora ontwikkelde die thans het een wandeling waard is.
Op N51 03.575 E4 22.903 vind je een ruime parking en dit is de ideale plaats om je wandeling te starten.

A mosaic of forrest and ponds in the alluvial plains of the Rupel river.
Once the Rupel river was a wide and long bay, wich deposited century after century sediments in her valley. Through this sedimentation during many centuries, thick layers of peat were formed, that developed into a so-called 'broekbos' ('brook forrest') . This is a swamp-type of vegetation on moist lowlands that remain very humid because of groundwater being pushed up through pressure caused by the nearby river (the Rupel). Because the land is very low compared to the surrounding river area, it is frequently flooded and especially during wintertime, it can remain flooded for longer periods. The type of land mostly consists of bog, peat and clay. Mammoths, Artic foxes, Aurochs, wild horses, Sibearian Rhinoceros once all found their home here and for centuries, fossiles were deposited through sedimentation. The remains from Mammoths and other extinct species can be visited at the information center at the Scheyvaertshof. In 1870, the remains of an prehistorical pole village were found at the edge of ‘the Broek’. It still remains a wet area that, with exception of a few sandridges, only rises two to three meters above sea level but where through the centuries a vegetation was developed that is worth to be visited.
At N51 03.575 E4 22.903 you will find parking possibility and this is the ideal spot to start your walk.
