This is #7 in a series of caches celebrating movies, both good and
bad.
Arguably one of the best baseball movies made! The movie tells the
tale of Roy Hobbs (played by Robert Redford) with an almost
mythical talent and a mysterious past. The story actually opens up
with a young 19 year old Hobbs on a train to Chicago to tryout for
the Cubs as a pitcher. His dream becomes shattered after being shot
by a mysterious woman (presumed to have already murdered two
athletes of “god”-like abilities). Fast forward 16
years, Hobbs is now playing for the New York Knights, a fictional
National League team. After getting a chance to play, he is able to
show his ‘natural’ talent by literally knocking the
cover off the baseball, eventually earning a permanent starting
role. With Hobbs’ help, the Knights go on a hot streak and
compete for the pennant. Facing the final game of the season, Hobbs
is offer a bribe to throw the game. After considering the deal,
Hobbs comes to realize during the game that he is the father of the
boy with Iris, his childhood sweetheart.
Coming to terms with his maturity, the game comes down to Hobbs in
the bottom of the ninth. First pitch - foul ball straight back to
the press box shattering the window. Next pitch – swing and
miss. Third pitch – a deep drive down the line but hooks
foul. After jogging to the plate, Hobbs finds his beloved home made
bat Wonderboy split in two. He then asks the batboy to pick him out
a winner. The bat boy, in return, picks out his own handmade bat
the “Savoy Special”. Hobbs steps up to the plate, digs
in, blood on his shirt, inside fastball, Hobbs swings and crushes
the ball to right field, striking the lights and sparks come
reining down. Knights win the pennant! Hobbs did it! The movie ends
with Hobbs playing catch with his son, and Iris watching them.
Classic ending.
I still love the last sequence of the movie, making this my
favorite baseball movie. Just the musical score alone brings glory
and magic to a national pastime.
