Marschen (Schwemmland) sind generell flache Landstriche ohne natürliche Erhebungen. Sie liegen in etwa auf Höhe des Meeresspiegels landeinwärts des Watts und der Salzwiesen. Entstehungsgeschichtlich gehören sie zu den jüngsten geologischen Formationen: Sie sind holozänen Ursprungs, also nacheiszeitlich.

Ausgedehnte Marschgebiete gibt es in Deutschland nicht nur direkt an der Nordsee, sondern beispielsweise auch als Flussmarschen im Gezeiten-Einflussgebiet der Tideflüsse, insbesondere der Elbe, Weser, Eider, Oste und Ems. Zwar werden auch weiter im Binnenland gelegene Niederungslandschaften umgangssprachlich oft als "Marsch" bezeichnet (oder Abwandlungen davon, z.B. Leinemasch in Hannover mit dem Maschsee). Bodenkundlich und hydrologisch handelt es sich dabei aber präziser um Auen.

Als Elbmarsch wird das ausgedehnte Marschgebiet an der Unter- und zum Teil auch an der Mittelelbe bezeichnet. Ursprünglich war der flache Landstrich entlang der Elbe insgesamt tidebeeinflusst. Mit dem Bau der Staustufe bei Geesthacht ist die Elbe oberhalb Geesthachts nicht mehr tideabhängig. Im Zuge der Hollerkolonisation wurden große Teile der vorher überflutungsgefährdeten Elbmarsch eingedeicht und urbar gemacht.

Die Elbmarsch ist sehr fruchtbar und insbesondere von großen Grünlandanteilen geprägt. Neben der Viehhaltung, insbesondere der Milchkuhhaltung, werden sie auch für den Ackerbau genutzt. So ist Dithmarschen vor allem für den Kohl bekannt, das Alte Land ist eines der größten Obstbaugebiete Mitteleuropas, die Vierlande und Marschlande bei Hamburg gehören zu den bedeutendsten Anbaugebieten für Gemüse und Blumen. Das Kehdinger Land sowie die Lüneburger Elbmarsch sind besonders durch eine blühende Pferdezucht geprägt. Seit über 200 Jahren werden hier erfolgreich Hannoveraner gezüchtet.

In den 1990er Jahren wurde überregional aus den Elbmarschen berichtet, nachdem im Umkreis des Forschungszentrums GKSS und des Kernkraftwerk Krümmels eine erhöhte Anzahl von Leukämieerkrankungen nachgewiesen wurde. Ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen den Erkrankungsfällen und den Nuklearanlangen konnte jedoch nicht erwiesen werden.

Marshes are general level regions without natural elevations. They lie in possibly on height of the sea level inland of the watt and the salt meadows. Origin-historically they belong to the latest geologic formations: They are of holozänen origin, so postglacial.

There are vast march areas in Germany not only directly by the North Sea, but, for example, also as river marshes in the tidal sphere of influence of the tide rivers, in particular of the Elbe, the Weser, Eider, to the Oste and Ems. Though situated depression sceneries are also called further in the interior colloquially often than "march" (or variations of it, e.g., Leinemasch in Hannover with the Maschsee). Geologic and hydrologic concerns it, besides, however, more exactly around meadows.

The vast march area is called Elbmarsch in the unter and partly also in the Mittelelbe. Originally the level region was tide-influenced along the Elbe all together. With the construction of the traffic jam step with Geesthacht the Elbe is not dependent on tide above Geesthachts any more. In the course of the Hollerkolonisation large parts of the before flood-threatened Elbmarsch eingedeicht and were made old cash.

The Elbmarsch is marked very fertile and in particular by big meadowland shares. Beside the cattle position, in particular of the milk cow's position, they are also used for the agriculture. Thus Ditmarsh is known above all for the cabbage, the old country is one of the biggest fruit growing areas of Central Europe, the 4 country and marshy land near Hamburg belong to the most important cultivation areas for vegetables and flowers. The Kehdinger country as well as the Lüneburger Elbmarsch are marked particularly by a blossoming horse breeding. For over 200 years Hanoverians are bred here successfully.

In the 1990s it was reported national from the Elbmarschen, after in the vicinity of the research centre GKSS and the nuclear power plant Krümmels a raised number of leukaemia illnesses was proved. Nevertheless, a direct connection between the illness cases and the Nuklearanlangen could not be proved.
