He was a country music performer known for his "hobo music" style. He was born in Texas, but during his life he also lived in Nebraska and Idaho. He was a U.S. Air Force B-29 Super Fortress pilot and flight engineer during the Korean War. In San Jose, California he entered a talent show and won the $150 prize. He left the Air Force in 1976 and became a full-time performer. In 1985 he moved to Branson, Missouri and bought a theater, opened a museum and also eventually owned two motels. He was one of the first big stars to open a show in Branson.
On April 12, 1999 he passed away from leukemia at age 67.
