L'espace de l'actuelle place du Molard a longtemps été occupée par un port ouvert sur le lac Léman. La tour qui domine la place sur son côté septentrional est un ancien ouvrage militaire intégré à l'enceinte qui fermait la ville et protégeait le port au XIVe siècle. Reconstruite sous sa forme actuelle en 1591, elle est par la suite ornée de frises peintes, d'armoiries des principaux acteurs de l'histoire du Moyen Âge et de la Réforme protestante ainsi que d'une plaque sculptée à la gloire de « Genève, cité de refuge ». Le lac allait jusqu'à son pied et une douve permettait de faire décharger des marchandises. Les Halles du Molard attenantes, édifiées en 1690, servent alors de plate-forme aux échanges de Genève avec le reste du bassin lémanique.

La place aujourd'hui piétonne et agrémentée d'une fontaine octogonale surmontée d'un obélisque de marbre datant de 1711 est rénovée en 2004 afin de supprimer les traces des anciennes voies de circulation. Plusieurs cafés y installent leurs terrasses durant l'été.

The actual square has been for several centuries a harbor leading into the Leman Lake. The tower located on the northern side is an old military build which was part of the battlements that were protecting the city and the harbor at the XIV century. The tower was rebuild with its actual shape in 1591 and later been decorated with painted friezes, armorials of main actors of local medieval history and of the Protestant Reform and with the scupt to the glory of Geneva « Genève, cité de refuge ». The lake was coming until its pillars and a moat/ditch allowed goods to be unloaded. The adjacent covered market was built in 1690 and was the market place for the whole lemanic basin.

Today it is a pedestrian place, embellished with an octagonal fountain surmounted by a marble obelisk dating from 1711. The place has been rebuilt in 2004 to suppress roadways. Several cafés and restaurants deploy their terraces there in summer time.
