RoboCop 2 is the 1990 sequel to the widely acclaimed 1987 cyberpunk action film RoboCop. Both films were set in a dystopian Detroit in the near future. A city overrun by crime and corruption and not so much unlike the Detroit of the eighties or today. The original RoboCop was filmed in Dallas. In making the sequel, the producers wanted to show how the the fictional Detroit was being revitalized and choose Houston because of the variety of architecture found here. The spectacular downtown Houston skyline with so many new and distinctive buildings made it the perfect setting to show the revitalization.
Filming took place all over town and featuring both the newest and shabbiest areas of Houston. Buildings in the film near here include the Alley Theater, the Wortham Theater Center, the Bank of America building, the Albert Thomas Convention Center(now Bayou Place) and City Hall. The convention center was a cheaply build dreary concrete building with none of the decorations that have spruced it up. It made a stark contrast to the handsome granite and glass buildings that surrounded it. All but City Hall can be seen from this location, it is a few blocks on the other side of the Bayou Place.
Despite the great visuals, RoboCop 2 was not as well received as its predecessor. This was largely because of a shift in focus away from the original cyberpunk themes about the loss of humanity from the growing integration of technology and machines into life. This follow up was to a less thoughtful action film featuring a hyper violent 12 year old. After this film, the lead actor and actress dropped out of the series and the even less well regarded RoboCop 3 was made with a different cast.
The coordinates were double checked and are spot on, but downtown can be a difficult place to get a good signal. After placing this cache then walking around to find a few other caches, the satellites had moved and my GPSr would not give accurate readings. If you have trouble downtown, a map from Google or on your receiver will help.
