Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash located just off the main road through Lydiard Green.

This cache and dash is situated to draw your attention to the World War II Pill Box at Lydiard Green. Despite living in the area for 16 years and driving past this location every day for a number of years, it was only by chance that I stumbled across this defensive structure when I was called to repair a computer for a gentleman who lived alongside it.

Parking is very difficult here but it should be possible to stop in the gravel lane for a short time in order to retrieve this cache.

During the second World War tank traps and square cement road blocks were set up in this area at various points along the road. An old concrete gun site can still be seen in a nearby field. The tank trenches cut across Lydiard Green to the South and were 14 feet wide and 6 feet deep with vertical sides. Many farm holdings were bisected by the trenches and temporary wooden bridges were erected for them. The pill box was built to help repel any invasion coming from the North. The tank trenches have long since been filled in and are no longer visible.

For those who are interested there is a plethora of information about pill boxes available at: (visit link)

The cache is a small clip-lock box in a camouflage bag with room for small swaps and geocoins etc.
