This 'cache and dash' honors the joy between children and trains.
As you head west from Ted's Place towards Poudre Canyon, this cache
is 2.7 miles up the canyon from the cattleguard. Just around the
bend from mile marker 118, pull over in front of the metal gate on
your right and park.
Looking north you'll see what the locals call "Hole in the Wall".
This hole was actually a tunnel that was punched through the ridge
in 1881 by the Greeley, Salt Lake & Pacific Railway. This is
about as far up the canyon as the proposed railway got before plans
to build a railroad up and over the top of Poudre Canyon were
abandoned.
In the early 1900's, the tunnel was daylighted (top removed) to
allow equipment to lay a water pipe from the old Fort Collins Water
Treatment Plant to Fort Collins.
This is the easiest of our 'Nature Bats Last' series. The cache
has lots of toys to swap for the youngin's. You do not have to
cross the fence...have fun!
