There are so many great hides in this area that I couldn't believe that there wasn't one here, so now there is. This cache is located at Houston Brook Falls, in Carrabassett Valley. From Rt 27, turn onto the Carriage Rd, then take a left onto Houston Brook Rd. the trail head is 1.9 miles after the turn, you can drive all the way there. The walk/hike down to the hide is somewhat steep, although I think that most people will be able to make the trip, use caution when the conditions are wet.
This is a favorite swimming hole for locals, but is far enough off the beaten path that it doesn't get crowded, be sure to bring a bathing suit on a hot day (and bug spray). The road to get here turns into an active logging road, so the normal rules apply (yield to trucks, travel with caution) but the road is passable for any type of vehicle. The walk down to the bottom of the falls is a short one, but does go down a ways (there is a waterfall here after all) and there are some spots with slick rocks and roots, etc. For the more adventurous, the fastest way down is jumping off the rocks into the very deep pool below (quite safe, unless you have a heart condition). The cache is a good sized, but not quite Regular sized, Lock-n-Lock, and it is staring right at you. Please return exactly as you found it. There is a fair amount of muggle activity here, so please use some stealth and don't forget to CITO.
