Geocache Description:

CITO and Picnic at Wilborn Lake!

I thoroughly enjoyed a cache run that artican, jrou111 and I went on last weekend. Great caches, a beautiful interesting area, and rugged terrain that requires either a tough hike or a 4wd vehicle, which prohibits many folks from getting to them.

So...

Let's have a CITO and Picnic event at Wilborn Lake!

While it takes a 4wd to get to the event site itself and to the caches that we will hunt after the event the event site itself and the caches we will hunt after it are easy short walks, almost drive-ups, once you get to them, so this event is open and accessible to everyone. We will have volunteers with 4wd vehicles at the parking area to take attendees into / out of the event.

The CITO and picnic will be at a nice big camp site near the trailhead below The Cleaner by 3card (GC115RD) where we can swim and picnic on a flat point that sticks out into the lake. That's a great place but could use some clean-up.

Let's meet at noon, swim, picnic and play in the woods! Bring your fishing rod! If you have a raft, float or man-portable boat and want to fish (I would love to fly-fish for bream here) or go for a beautiful paddle about the secluded lake we will carry it in for you in one of the 4wd shuttles.

I will BBQ a couple of pork Boston Butt roasts on a campfire, y'all bring drinks (lots of water!) and fixins to make a picnic, or come early if you want to bring your own meat so we'll have time to grill it.

This is ~ a 2-acre lakeside open dirt space in the forest with absolutely no amenities, so it will be strictly primitive except for tables and chairs that you will bring in.

I will set up a chemical camp toilet in a privacy shelter... it'll be a 5-gallon bucket with a seat, so don't expect luxury, but at least you won't have to use leaves!

There is enough trash and debris to fill the bed of a pickup truck, so it won't take a group too long to CITO the place. Bring a change of clothes and towels and after the CITO jump in the lake for a cooling swim. I will set up a tent for folks to change clothes in.

After the picnic we will have volunteers with 4wd vehicles to take cachers to the caches near the lake, then around to G.I. Freaux's Battle Bro's (HELCOM) and the great caches along that route. There's even a SCUBA-required cache in the lake near the event site!

If you have no access to a 4wd or have never been off-roading in rough terrain you will love the ride to these caches, and this is your chance to find some pretty inaccessible caches.

We will have my Durango and two other 4wd vehicles (at least) to shuttle folks in and out of the event location and afterward to the area caches. Cell phones do work in this area and I will set up a radio at the parking lot so you can call 205-914-6814 or call on the radio (FRS Channel 12) for a shuttle when you get there, otherwise we'll have a shuttle run on the hour from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m.

There is plenty of easily accessible parking space at the end of Hwy 268 in a large clearing by the RR tracks and we will run frequent shuttles in and out of the event site. [I will post parking coordinates shortly]. Some brave (read foolhardy) folks could even drive cars in as far as the top of the hill above The Cleaner and park alongside the road. We will shuttle folks up and down that hill to the event site.

A 5/5 event!

Camping is allowed at the site, so anyone who enjoys primitive camping may want to bring camping gear... but you will have to lug it up the hill to your car Sunday as I won't be there and 2wd cars won't make that hill.
