WSQ Quincy Petrified Tree Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

sandlanders: I finally got around to checking on this cache, and the area at the final has changed quite a bit with all the good hiding spots now exposed, thanks to some trimming. Rather than trying to locate a new hiding spot and reworking the puzzle, I'm going to archive this WSQ multi in a lovely cemetery. Thank you to all who came to visit and look for this cache.

Geocache Description:

An offset multi using information gained at the coordinates to obtain a set of new coordinates for the hide. Looking for a camoed pill bottle container. Bring your own writing instrument.

This cache is placed in Quincy Cemetery in rural Adams County. Located very close to Castle Rock Lake (but without a view), this still active cemtery is quite large with room to expand. As you walk around the grounds, notice the Civil War veterans and the older version of the metal military marker marking their graves. In addition to the traditional "cemetery trees", there are many large burr oaks providing shade along the walkways. The gates were open when we visited, but we parked on the road outside the fence. If the snow gets deep in the winter, doing this cache will get harder, but it should be available.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

The sadowskifamily geocaching team has placed many Petrified Tree caches around central Wisconsin, and the history of the grave markers that inspired their series can be found on any of the caches pages for the Petrified Tree caches. Here's a link to the first one: GCWVJN Sadowskifamily has also inspired many other cachers to place their own PT caches, and they now have all of us Wisconsin cachers noticing these unique monuments everywhere as we travel throughout the state and beyond.

The listed coordinates will lead you to a "petrified tree" marker with a family name on it. Use the information on the tree and accompanying stones to find answers to the following questions. The final, which is within the boundaries of the cemetery, can be located at:

N 43° 5A.BCC W 089° 5D.EEF

  • A = number of letters in the family name minus 5
  • B = Mary's death month minus Mary's birth month
  • CC = twice the number of branch stubs on the main marker plus the total number of ivy leaves
  • D = number of words on the end of a certain upper branch stub times 2
  • EE = last two digits of A.W.'s year of death plus the day of A.W.'s birth
  • F = number of "half-stump" side markers

This cache is dedicated to the crazy geocaching bike rider with the handle "zoesbrother". If you race in the triathlon next year, ZB, and ask us, “Is there a cache in that cemetery that I saw the sign for?”, our answer to you will be, “YES!”

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

This is a "WSQ" cache, or "Wisconsin Spirit Quest" cache that identifies caches that are set in cemeteries. Please be respectful of the area, and observe the rules and posted hours, which are typically sunrise to sunset. If there are services going on or if mourners might be distracted by your visit, respect their privacy and come back later. THE CACHE CONTAINER IS NOT HIDDEN NEAR OR IN CONTACT WITH ANY GRAVE MARKER.
