Geocache Description:

A cache located in a cemetery in Lyon County, Kansas.

I have teamed up with Wonkman and GumshoeTully to put together a Lyon County Cemetery Series. When completed, this series should include approximately 37 cemeteries scattered around Lyon County, Kansas.

Greenwood Cemetery, which is also known as Upper Dry Creek Cemetery, is located about three and one half miles southwest of Emporia, Kansas. ( NE Quarter, Section 32, Township 19, Range 11 ) The ground occupied by the cemetery was donated on February 28, 1871, by Elizabeth Morgan. The donation was made to the trustees of Dry Creek Cemetery, and to their successors in office.

According to tombstone inscriptions, the earliest burials in Greenwood Cemetery were those of children of John R. and Elizabeth Griffith: Caroline who died January 2, 1860; Elizabeth A. who died January 19, 1860; John who died January 21, 1860; and Mary who died February 8, 1860. they were buried before the formal deeding of the cemetery ground.

The cemetery continues to be in use, and is in good condition. ( Source - Flint Hills Genealogical Society )

The cache you seek is a small, camouflaged bison tube. It contains a log only, so bring your own writing utensil.

As always, remember where you are. Treat the location and its residents with the utmost respect.
