Geocache Description:

NORSK

ENGLISH

Breistølen Fjellstove (mountain lodge) lies 1030 meters above sea level, by the road (RV52) over Hemsedalsfjellet, and also along the marked hiking trail of the Norwegian Trekking Association from Sulebu to Bjordalsbu.

Breistølen was formerly the summer pasture of the farm Berge in Borgund. The first farmer to live here year-round settled in 1842. He had to offer shelter for travelers over the mountain from April to October. Breistølen turned into a transport station house around 1850. By the turn of 20th century, the station master had to have 10 horses available for transport over the mountain to the next station at Bjøberg, or down to the farm Hegg in Borgund. Initially big herds of domesticated reindeer were driven to make a road by packing the snow. After the introduction of the automobile, Breistølen had a belted-track vehicle route and became a center for snow clearing and other activities related to the traffic over the mountain. Farming up here could often be difficult and it was a long way down to the village to get what they needed, especially in winter when the weather was bad. Children had to move down to the valley when they started at school. (The first farmer at Breistølen had 19 children.) The new hotel building was built in 1952, and in 1956 the farming was closed down. Today Breistølen is open during the season (Easter and summer.)
