Zwischenahner Meer
Despite its name the Zwischenahner Meer is neither an ocean nor a sea but rather a jewel of a lake, situated in the Regional District of Ammerland. It is the third-largest lake in Lower Saxony and covers 550 hectares. The perimeter, distinguished by lovely tree-lined walkways and bicycle paths, is 11 kilometres long.
Small ferry boats connect the resort town and spa of Bad Zwischenahn in the south with the village of Dreibergen - three mountains - in the north, but the mountains, you guessed it, are mere hillocks. Germany’s northwest corner is not known for its mountains.
On average, the lake is little more than 2 kilometres across and 3.3 metres deep. It rests about five metres above sea level. The bottom is covered with a soft layer of decomposing vegetable matter, an anaerobic sludge.
Origin
The Permian period ended about 250 million years ago. It was the age of amphibians, and they shared one single continent that we call Pangaea today. Glaciation or increased volcanism - or both? - ended the Permian and caused the largest mass extinction of life in the history of our planet (so far).
A leftover from this, the end of the Paleozoic Era was a salt dome that had been pushed up - one of many all over the planet, no doubt. This one lasted through the Mesozoic Era during which the dinosaurs and mammals evolved. Groundwater ate away at the salt for millions of years, eventually causing the dome to crumble and then decay further into a shallow funnel-shaped formation, also known as a doline, a closed depression. It is within such a depression that the Zwischenahner Meer was formed.
Salt domes make excellent traps for hydrocarbons and geologists connect them with oil fields. Exploratory drilling was done in the area in 1949 and the results, while not confirming a profitable oil field, established the existence of the salt dome as part of a ridge that stretches from Delmenhorst via Leer and Jemgum to Bunde. The surface of the shallow doline sits about 300 metres beneath the lake and is covered with clay, thus preventing further leeching and consequent erosion. Steeper edges of the depression have been found below both the northern and southern banks.
The pollen discovered within the thick blanket of anaerobic mud proved interesting for biologists. They were able to confirm that the Zwischenahner Meer began about twelve-thousand years ago, near the end of the last glacial period, during the Weichselian glaciation.
Soon after, the Stone Age began in this part of the world.

Zwischenahner Meer

Das Zwischenahner Meer ist ein See im Landkreis Ammerland in Niedersachsen. Es liegt zwischen dem Kurort Bad Zwischenahn im Süden und der Ortschaft Dreibergen im Norden.
Mit einer Wasserfläche von 5,5 km² (550 ha) ist das Zwischenahner Meer nach dem Steinhuder Meer und dem Dümmer der drittgrößte Binnensee Niedersachsens.
Bei einem Umfang von 11 km beträgt die durchschnittliche Wassertiefe 3,3 m, die tiefste Stelle oberhalb einer Faulschlammschicht etwa 5,5 bis 6,0 Meter. Der Pegel befindet sich auf 5 m ü. NN.
Entstehung
Das Zwischenahner Meer befindet sich über einem Salzstock als Überbleibsel des Zechsteinmeeres aus dem Erdzeitalter des Perm vor etwa 250 Millionen Jahren. Es entstand dadurch, dass es durch Salzablaugungen von Grundwasser zu einem Einsturz des Salzstockes und des darüber liegenden Deckgebirges kam. In der auf diese Weise entstandenen Doline bildete sich das Zwischenahner Meer.
Charakteristisch für diese Seen ist eine große Tiefe im Verhältnis zum Durchmesser.
Am Zwischenahner und am Rostruper Ufer lassen sich jedoch steilere Ränder nachweisen. Sie werden durch die mächtige Faulschlammschicht aber stark verwischt.
1949 wurden zum Nachweis eines Salzstockes Bohrungen durchgeführt, deren Ergebnis eine Karte mit der Lage des sich unter dem See befindlichen Salzstockes war.
Demnach gehört dieser Salzstock zu einer Salzlinie, die sich von Delmenhorst über Leer und Jemgum bis nach Bunde hinzieht.
Der Scheitelpunkt des Salzstockes wird etwa 300 Meter unterhalb des Sees vermutet und ist mit tonigen Schichten überdeckt. Diese Schichten sorgten dafür, dass durch die Subrosionen keine typischen Einsturztrichter entstanden, sondern eine weniger tiefe, mehr flächenhafte Absenkung, jedoch mit deutlichen Steilrändern.
Durch Bohrungen in den Faulschlammablagerungen (auch Mudde oder Gyttja genannt) ergaben sich Pollenfunde, die die Entstehung vor etwa 12.000 Jahren belegen (Endabschnitt der Weichsel-Eiszeit in Ostdeutschland; in dieser Region als periglaziale Kältesteppe ausgeprägt).
