The seven caches can be attempted singly but have been placed to
be ideally completed as a series that circumnavigates some of the
lesser known areas of the Howgills taking you into valleys and onto
hill tops that seldom see walkers.
Prepare yourself for a most enjoyable and exhilarating
experience. The views along the route that I will take you are
stunning and breathtaking.
Start Point
The suggested start point is Carlingill where there is off-road
parking. The total distance from start to finish is 28km (18 miles)
Therefore a whole day would be needed to complete the Series.
Another Slateman cache - ‘Gorgeous Gill’ is located close to the
start point.
You may choose to start from other locations around the
Howgills. The choice is yours.
The caches are micros - slightly bigger than a 35mm container
but camouflaged. The majority of them should be fairly easy to find
with 'spoiler' pictures added just in case.
Howgills Hills & Dales #7 - Bonus Cache
The seventh cache is a mystery cache. The first six caches have a
unique number recorded at the top of the log that you must record
to obtain the coordinates of the 7th Howgills Hills & Dales #7
- Bonus Cache.
The Cache
The coordinates given in the cache location relate to the parking
space at Carlingill. The true coordinates can be calculated using
the unique numbers recorded in the logs of HHD #1 to #6 by
decrypting them in this simple mathematical code:-
N 54 WW.YYY
W 002 XX.ZZZ
#2 + 18 = WW
#5 + 17 = XX
#4 x #5 = ### + #3 = ### + 5 = YYY
#1 x #6 = ### x #2 = ### + 433 = ZZZ
Now you have your coordinates you can head off and hopefully
complete the series. The cache is a regular size that contains a
special, very well earned prize for the person who is FTF!
Congratulations to everyone who completes the seven caches,
particularly all in the same day.
I hope you enjoy and have as much fun discovering the beautiful
Howgill fells as much as I did when placing these caches. I have
taken you over some pretty severe climbs but I am sure you will
look back on your eventful day for some time to come.
