The cache is a small plastic container with a log, pen and 2 AA batteries for FTF. It is located near the entrance to the Palomar Observatory.
The Palomar Observatory is located in north San Diego County and is owned and operated by the California Institute of Technology. The Palomar Observatory is home to five telescopes that are used nightly for a wide variety of astronomical research programs. Among them is the 200-inch Hale Telescope named after astronomer George Ellery Hale. The 200-inch Hale Telescope was first used on January 26, 1949 and continues to be used every clear night for scientific research by astronomers from Caltech and their operating partners, Cornell University, the University of California, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The telescope is equipped with modern optical and infrared array imagers, spectrographs, and an adaptive optics system that for the past 60 years has touched the stars.
There is no admission fee and the Palomar Observatory is open to the public daily (except December 24 and 25) for daytime visits from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. while Daylight Savings Time is observed and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. while on Standard Time. The observatory will be closed if travel conditions are hazardous.
