A Universidade Federal do Ceará é uma autarquia vinculada ao Ministério da Educação. Nasceu como resultado de um amplo movimento de opinião pública. Foi criada em dezembro de 1954 e instalada no dia 25 de junho de 1955. Originalmente foi constituída pela união da Escola de Agronomia, Faculdade de Direito, Faculdade de Medicina e Faculdade de Farmácia e Odontologia.
A UFC chega hoje com praticamente todas as áreas do conhecimento representadas em seus campi, onde reunem-se quatro centros (Ciências, Ciências Agrárias, Humanidades e Tecnologia) e cinco faculdades (Direito; Educação; Economia, Administração, Atuária e Contabilidade; Farmácia, Odontologia e Enfermagem; e Medicina).
Sediada em Fortaleza, Capital do Estado, a UFC é um braço do sistema do Ensino Superior do Ceará e sua atuação tem por base todo o território cearense, de forma a atender às diferentes escalas de exigências da sociedade.
O Campus do Benfica reune a Reitoria e várias faculdades, além das Casas de cultura estrangeiras.

The Federal University of Ceará is under the Ministry of Education. It was born as a result of a broad movement of public opinion. It was created in December 1954 and installed on June 25, 1955. It was originally formed by the union of the School of Agronomy, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine and School of Pharmacy and Dentistry.
UFC arrives today with virtually all areas of knowledge represented on their campuses, which gather four centers (Science, Agricultural Sciences, Humanities and Technology) and five faculties (Law, Education, Economics, Business Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Science, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing, and Medicine).
Based in Fortaleza, capital of the State, UFC is an arm of the system of Higher Education of Ceará and its action is based on the entire state of Ceará, in order to meet the requirements of different levels of society.
The Campus of Benfica meets at the Rectory and several colleges, and the Houses of foreign culture.
