War, Industry, and Horseshoes Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

BriGuyNY: New construction has wiped out Stage 2, and likely the final location.

When I originally set this up, Stage 1 was fully accessible, not gated off. Stage 2 was the reason for the high difficulty rating... it was a real guardrail bolt, with final coordinates painted inside the bolt head... so you had to unscrew the nut and remove the bolt to see it. The final was a micro inside a crumbling brick wall (or pillar, I forget which), somewhere across the old parking lot.

The title was derived from something you'd experience at each stage. The first was a war memorial, the second was a guardrail (industry) and the third was next to a sand patch with posts where locals would often play horseshoes.

I moved away from this neighborhood in 2010, and this hide has continued to live on with help from others every now and then. Sad to see it go, but fun while it lasted.

Geocache Description:

Troy has a lot of history, and along with that comes all sorts of nooks and crannies that many know nothing about. Here, within walking distance, I highlight a couple of those right in my neighborhood which I had not noticed until very recently.

At the IP you will see a plaque with many names on it. These names are important, not only for the sake of historical significance and freedom, but also to complete this geocache. There are 3 sections to the plaque. In each section are 2 columns. Count the letters in the names. You are solving for the following:

N42* 43.ABC
W073* 41.DEF

A = Section 2, Column 2, 7th one down, last name
B = Section 1, Column 2, 12th one down, first name look-alike
C = Section 1, Column 1, 1st one down, last name
D = Section 2, Column 1, Last one down, last name
E = Section 3, Column 2, 14th one down, last name
F = Section 3, Column 1, 10th one down, last name

This is not the end of your journey, but only the beginning. The final is a log only and covered out of sight, so take notes along the way and BYOP. This hide is entirely unconventional. When you find the final, please re-hide out of sight. Watch for muggles too.

Enjoy Troy!
