--------OLD FOLSOM FIREHOUSE BELL---------

The fire bell which sits in front of the main fire station on Glenn Dr. is one of Folsom Fire Department's oldest possessions.

It was cast in Sheffield England in 1858 and was first put into service in the belfry of the Folsom Congregational Church which was near Figueroa St. and Scott St. The church soon fell into disuse and the bell was relocated to the Folsom Grammar School until the building was razed in 1915. While in service at the school the bell was used as a school bell, fire alarm bell and as a funeral knell.

From 1915-1924 the bell hung in the firehouse which stood on the corner of Wool St. and Sutter St. In August of 1929 a new firehouse was built on Sutter St. near the corner of Riley St. and Sutter St. the old bell again went into action in the belfry tower. When the Coloma St. firehouse was built the bell was retired and displayed at the front entrance. It then was moved in the mid 1980’s to the front of the firehouse on Natoma St. and then to where it is now displayed in front of the firehouse on Glenn Dr.

The Bell was last used for the Change of Command Ceremony for the swearing in of Folsom Fire Department’s new Fire Chief, Ron Phillips, January, 2011.
