Mātiu/Somes Island is an island in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara / the Wellington Harbour and is owned, along with Mokopuna (Leper Is.) and Mākaro (Ward Is.) by Taranaki Whānui Ki Te Upoko O Te Ika A Māui, and is also a protected scientific and historic reserve managed in partnership with DOC. This trail gives you the chance to explore the island's history and wildlife. From the Biosecurity Room at the wharf, clues will direct you to Cache 1 and there to the rest of the trail. PLEASE LET THE RANGER KNOW THAT YOU ARE GEOCACHING SO THAT THEY CAN POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Visitors are asked to follow all instructions given by the island Rangers on arrival to the island. Caches are located on walking tracks and farmland so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
