Geocache Description:

They used to call this place the "Littlest Mountain in the Territory" and when you look around, you can see why.

Amazingly, there was a lookout somewhere near here at one time. Built in 1935, it was a 20' pole L-4 tower. In 1955, it was purchased by a private party and removed to be used as a vacation cabin.

During its 'professional' life, it was used primarily for training purposes. After plotting the azimuth, vertical angle, and legal subdivision of a "smoke" from the barn at the Darrington Ranger Station, lookout candidates journeyed here to make the cross-shot and become acquainted with other tools and chores of a lookout. (Visit GC16YHH - Lookout School in Darrington to learn more about the barn.)

Although the lookout is long gone, this area has supported recreational activities for many years. At one time there was a campground and boat launch down by the river, but those were destroyed by floods in 2003, along with the bridge, since replaced. It appears that all that currently remains of the campground is a parking area and restroom. The same flood also washed out the Whitechuck Bench Trailhead, but that has also been replaced and is very close to this cache.

About the cache:
  • Do not totally trust your maps. The roads on this side of the river near the cache have changed.
  • You're looking for a regular sized Lock 'n' Lock. (I don't think I swapped it for an ammo can!)
  • While you're here, enjoy the Whitechuck Bench Trail and grab the two new (as of this writing) caches that are up that way. Also, check out the peek-a-boo view of Mt. Pugh.
  • This cache may not be available during winter.
  • The member's only designation will eventually be removed, sometime after FTF.
  • Please let me know if there is a problem with the cache or coords.
  • Most importantly, have fun!
