Geocache Description:

Placed along a strategic corridor that linked the Jornada del Muerto to the Rio Grande,Fort McRae served travelers and early settlers along the treacherous Jornada del Muerto. For 13 years, from 1863 until 1876 the fort played a physical and symbolic role in maintaining order in the area.

Some 40 years after the fort was abandoned a dam was built on the Rio Grande, forming the Elephant Butte Reservoir and dooming the fort to the depths of the lake.

This cache is located along the Sierra County's, "Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway" Besides looting the cache, read the history of the fort and enjoy the view of Elephant Butte lake.

Original cache contents: Disposable camera (take a picture of your group), marble magnet, message recorder key chain, stamp pennies (White Sands, and Space Museum),Dice, and NM Parks state anniversary token and seal.
