Geocache Description:

It looks like any corner with stop signs. But these have a story to tell. They weren’t always there. It took a tragedy.

It was 12:30 a.m. early Sunday morning March 14, 1955 and Robert Andrew Chapman was going east along the avenue as a car driven by Toraf Fjalestad came charging down the hill. Chapman despite being to Fjalestad’s right side was broad sided less than three blocks from home.

This was an era before seat belts or breathalizer tests. Fjalestad and his friends admitted to having been drinking but said they were not drunk. Chapman couldn’t make a statement as he had died instantly after hitting his head and breaking apart a two foot survey marker common at corners in those days. When the police arrived they could smell alcohol but it was argued the reason Fjalestad was acting strangely was because he had discovered a man was dead - not because he was drunk.

As you view the site you can envision the claim that the trees, the stone wall and the slope of the land looking to the north up the hill or looking west as you come down the hill made visibility difficult.

Nevertheless over a period of months numerous charges were laid against him. These included:

- manslaughter
- criminal negligence resulting in death while operating a motor vehicle
- criminal negligence while operating a motor vehicle
- being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle

The final outcome was only one charge — a 30 Day Sentence for Drunken Driving and the loss of driving privileges for one year.

The lasting legacy - two stop signs with a story to tell.

The way points are where the survey marker was located.

The log is located in a pill container on a nearby boulevard at the intersection.
