At the second Highest of the old mine workings overlooking Castle Crag in Borrowdale Cumbria UK
Popjosh had great fun hiding this one . Take a good torch and have a look around while you are here!
This cache is at the second highest mine workings up the hill from the bas of Castle Crag. The approach is steep as the old mine is getting on for the same height as Castle Crag ( 254m by the GPS). Ascend following old mine track, or for the adventurous follow the stream to the spoil heap. As you come out onto the spoil heap plateau take a look around. You have a cracking view of Castle Crag and Derwent water behind, and a view of Stonethwaite and Borrowdale.
Then you turn and look at the mine. Pop said this was like Moria itself. ( it was a raining day and the water was spectacular).
A waterfall creates a curtain of rain across the cave entrance. Stone work by the old miners still stands in great condition despite long abandonment. It looked about spot on for a lost entrance to the dwarves kingdom. The cache does not need a torch to find and is not within the mine proper.
Be careful through, the rocks are wet from the waterfall and can be loose underfoot. A waterproof is necessary or be prepared to get wet!
You lose the GPS signal so this position is the last reliable fix.
Go to this position, then walk 4 paces forward and 3 paces to the left. The main clue is in the name of the cache.
The cache is a blue lidded container. Original contents: Pirate patch, pencil, notepad, bouncy ball etc etc. Released travel bugs Blaster and Beryl here
