This cache has been placed at the Horse Memorial, which you will
find on the grounds of the Weston Agricultuarl College in Mooi
River.
The Horse Memeorial commemorates the part that horse played in the
various wars in South Africa.
Between October 1899 and May 1902, some 326 000 horses and 51 000
mules were lost. Records show that 204 248 horses were ordered from
overseas and 216 868 were actually supplied. In round figures 60
000 horses came from UK, 64 000 from Australia, 27 000 from South
America, 15 000 from Canada and 3 000 from India, to name but a
few.
A remount service was situated at Mooi River. The depot was
healthy, at great altitude and had good pastures with ample
water.Paddocks, feeding toughs, feed sheds and stables were erected
by January 1900.
However, all these arrangements made by Colonel Stevenson for the
care of the remounts were negated by the fact that sick animals
from the front were sent to Mooi River. The sick animals started
infecting the healthy animals.
