Geocache Description:

Stockholmsgatorna är ett naturreservat på gränsen mellan Västernorrlands & Västerbottens län. Utkiksplats över kanjonen & en jättegryta (diameter i botten: 5,3m) formad av en sten med en grillplats i finns bland annat att titta på.

Sista biten fram till cachen är brant men det finns en rätt så lätt väg upp så titta i sidled innan ni bär iväg uppför...

"Stockholmsgatorna är det passande och beskrivande namnet på den mäktiga kanjonbildning som finns vid Lägstaåns källflöde vid Västerbottensgränsen. Sägnen säger att namnet på platsen kommer från en jämförelse med de trånga gränderna i Stockholms Gamla stan. Det kanske ligger något i det. Området ingår i riksobjekt Övre Gideälven.
Stockholmsgatorna är en imponerande urbergskanjon som bildades för ca 9000 år sedan av en isälv som uppstod i samband med tappningar av en stor isdämd issjö belägen direkt norr om länsgränsen mot Västerbotten. Vid flera tillfällen tömdes uppdämda issjöar ut genom kanjonen. Vid dessa tillfällen störtade vattenmassorna i ett enormt vattenfall ner i dalgången och tog med sig det mesta i sin väg. Isälven gröpte ur berget i en svaghetszon och en kanjon bildades. Idag är kanjonen ca 1,5 km lång med upp till 40 m höga lodräta bergväggar. I området finns blockgrottor som har gångar som leder till bland annat salar i fem våningar eller gångar som leder ned till 10 meter under marken. Här finns också jättegrytor. Söder ut övergår kanjondalen i en torrlagd fossil älvfåra, därefter i ett mäktigt tappningsdelta ovan högsta kustlinjen., HK Ett tydligt samband finns med den kanjon som finns vid Trolltjärn ca 12 km längre ner i dalgången. Den superakvatiskt bildade grusås som här finns följer dalstråket ner till HK-deltat vid Locksta.

Området kan nås från både norr och söder. Skogsbilvägar leder till den stig som passerar genom området. Platsen är naturreservat. Vid södra entrén finns vindskydd, grillplatser, bord och bänkar samt torrtoalett. Stigen fram till trolska Uvtjärn är handikappanpassad på så sätt att rullstolbundna kan nå platsen."

Lookout point above the canyon and a giant pot (diameter of bottom: 5.3 m) formed by a stone with a place to make a fire in it is to see. Last bit until the cache is steep but there is a fairly easy way so look sideways before you carry on up ...

"Stockholmsgatorna — Stockholm Streets — is the fitting and descriptive name of the impressive canyon at the source of the river Lägstaån, on the border with Västerbotten. Legend has it that the place name comes from comparing to the narrow alleys of Stockholm´s Gamla stan, the old town. Perhaps it´s not a bad likeness.
Stockholmsgatorna is an impressive primary rock canyon that was formed about 9000 years ago by a glacial river that occurred in association with the emptying of a large lake that had been dammed by ice, situated north of the county border with Västerbotten. Dammed glacial lakes emptied out through the canyon on several occasions. When this happened, the waters rushed in a through the valley with great force, carrying away almost everything in there way. The glacial river hollowed out the rock from a zone of weakness and a canyon was formed. The canyon is now 1.5km long with vertical walls up to 40m high. The area has tallus caves that have passages that sometimes lead to five-level chambers or which go 10 metres below the ground. There are also potholes (giant´s cauldrons). To the south, the canyon transforms into a fossil river bed, and then into a striking drainage delta above the marine limit. There is a clear connection to the canyon at Trolltjärn, about 12km farther down the valley. The super-aquatic gravel ridge found here follows the valley down to the marine limit delta at Locksta.

The area can be accessed from both the north and south.Forestroads lead to the path that passes through the area. The site is a nature reserve. At the southern entrance there are wind shelters, hearths, picnic tables and earth closet. The path to the magical Uvtjärn is wheelchair-friendly."
