Geocache Description:

This is an offset cache. The cache is NOT hidden at the posted coordinates. The coordinates will lead you to an historical marker located behind the French Lick Resort Hotel. See below for details on how to find the cache.

During the first decade of the 1800s, settlers began moving into this area from the southeast along an old bison path known as the Vincennes buffalo trace. By 1812, hostilities between the settlers and the natives had reached a point where the governor of the Territory, William Henry Harrison, ordered a company of rangers stationed in the area and several blockhouse forts constructed along the trace. The French Lick Fort was maintained as a government station until about the year 1815.

William Charles was a pioneer from Ireland who settled near the French Lick Fort. One evening in 1812 Mr. Charles was working his corn field near the fort when he was attacked and killed by Indians. So the story goes, his remains lie buried somewhere under the front lawn of the hotel.

Cache is a camouflaged medium peanut butter container hidden approximately 740 feet from the historical marker at a compass heading of 262 degrees
