North Carolina was once one of Top 10 Drive-in venues in the United States,
with more than 200 outdoor cinemas operating in the
Tar-heel state. Since the peak years in the late 1950's
the number of functioning drive-ins has declined 96%.
Presently, 9 of them remain in operation (when the ongoing restoration of the old
Charlotte Road Drive-in is completed, there will be 10).
The Bel-Air was a modest but classic Drive-in picture show dating back to 1955,
and one of the few which still maintained a large playground
for all of the wee folk; single screen, with a capacity for up to
180 cars; audio via FM radio, plus some traditional speakers.
Sadly it closed in 2000. It still stands today.
