Geocache Description:

A cache located in a cemetery in Lyon County, Kansas.

I have teamed up with Wonkman and GumshoeTully to put together a Lyon County Cemetery Series. When completed, this series should include approximately 37 cemeteries scattered around Lyon County, Kansas.

Badger Creek Cemetery ( which is also known as Stevenson Cemetery, as it was first called ), is a small plot in Section 14, Township 19, and Range 12. It is located just east of Badger Creek on Highway 50 south, not far from the junctions of the Cottonwood and Neosho Rivers, in Lyon County. It is now cared for by the township.

In 1878, the Tibbbals family owned the land on which the cemetery lies. At that time the Stevenson, Pearson, Ludy, and Fuqua families all lived near by. One of the oldest stones is that of Nathan Stevenson. It is weathered and very hard to read. The date of his death is either 1867 or 1862, and he died at the age of 68 years.

Time and the elements are taking a toll on this cemetery. One problem with the cemetery is that it is very close to the creek, and is sometimes flooded. ( Source - Flint Hills Genealogical Society)

The cemetery is still maintained to a certain extent, but it appears to be no longer in use. Make sure you look out for the barbed wire on the ground in the area of the cache.

I went out trying to find this location 3 times, with no success. I finally called a buddy who lived in the area, to see if he could help. Good call.....turns out the cemetery is surrounded on all sides by his property. Don't blink, or you'll miss it.

The cache you seek is a small, camouflaged lock & lock. It contains a logbook, pencil, and sharpener. Original swag includes a deck of cards I got in Vegas (stupid casinos), kooshball, frog, plastic farm critters, rubber snake, whistle, skeleton key w/medallion, caribinier, a cap lid good for a free 1 liter bottle of soda, and some of my signature stickers & golf tees. The is an FTF prize of a silver penny and/or a 9-volt battery. Happy caching!!!!

As always, remember where you are at. Show the utmost respect for the location and its residents.
