Hidden in the Gifford Pinchot Big Lava bed, this cache has an elevation of 2622 ft. The terrain is lava-rough--loose rocks, pits, crevices and, during the summer, heat reflected from the rock.
Gifford Pinchot area includes an ancient lava flow that nature is slowly reclaiming. There are other caches hidden nearby in the lava bed but many people are intimidated by the difficulty of traveling through this fantastic area. This cache is intended to be a "taste" of the lava bed. Most people can hike into the cache area in less than 15 minutes as it is less than 100 yards from the parking area to the cache. Remember that this is still travel into one of the roughest terrains in the state and you will find sharp lava rock, pits, loose rubble, cracks, and crevices that make this such a starkly beautiful area.
You are looking for a well marked ammo can hidden in a crevice behind a small vine maple. Yes, we know there are thousands of crevices and many vine maple. The co-ords should get you there.
