Geocache Description:

This cache is at the site of a row of cottages over 170 years old, they were built for senior employes of calver mill.
Calver Mill (SK 247745), formerly a cotton mill built on the site of a previous corn mill was used for filming Colditz and is now apartments. A smelting mill may have occupied the site in earlier days.It was built, in 1785-6, in 1802 the mill was burnt down. In 1805 it was rebuilt. About 200 people were employed at the mill in the 1830s, many coming from the neighbouring villages, others living near the mill.
Much of the yarn produced at Calver was sent to Leicester for use in the hosiery trade, and cotton spinning continued until the early 1920s when the mill closed down. During World War II the empty building was put into use as a storage depot while the yard became the scene of a crushing and washing plant for fluorspar. After the war the premises were bought by Mr H. G. Sissons, a director of Calver Mill Estate Ltd, and adapted for the manufacture of stainless steel sinks.
The site has now been converted into apartments.
Palking is in Calver village outside the school near the Bridge Inn, taking you over Calver bridge
giving views of the former mill and past the coffee shop worth a wander around the shop.
