Geocache Description:

The fifth cache in this series. The cache is an ammo box hidden in Prospector park just off the old Bulldog Mine road (more of a trail now).

Jupiter has more than 60 known moons. I was going to try and fill the container with 60 trade items, but I couldn't get them all to fit. The log book is rather large, so you may have to scrunch it a bit to get the lid to close.

FTF prize will help keep your GPS unit going, and going, and going, and going...

Congratulations to nomads65 for the FTF!

BACKGROUND INFO

The caches hidden in this series will be placed at locations that will perhaps help the cache finders gain an appreciation for the relative sizes of the Sun and planets, as well as the distances between them. Have fun!

THE SOLAR SYSTEM MODEL

In 2008, two roundabouts were constructed at the McKellips Rd. & Loop 202 on & off ramps. The center of each roundabout contains a concrete depiction of a rattlesnake. The inside diameter of each roundabout is about 80 feet. Using this to represent our Sun, I created a scaled model of our solar system of 1:57,000,000.

At this scale, one foot represents about 57 million feet in our solar system; one mile on Earth represents about 57 million miles in space. Thus the 80 foot diameter roundabout represents 4.56 billion feet in our solar system, or about the diameter of the Sun!

The orbit of Jupiter is about 484 million miles from the center of the Sun. Using this scaled model, with the eastern roundabout to represent the Sun, the scaled orbit of Jupiter is 44,800 feet from the center of the roundabout. This cache is placed about 44,800 feet from the center of the roundabout to represent the location of Jupiter in space, relative to the Sun.

SOME OTHER INTERSTING FACTS:

The speed of light in space is about 671 million miles per hour. On this model, the speed of light is about 11.8 miles per hour.

The diameter of Jupiter is about 143,000 miles. On this model, Jupiter would be just over 8 feet in diameter.
