Bushwhack Below Yellow Rock
This Cache was approved by the park superintendent. Permit Number 16-2009-001 Located in beautiful Devils Den State Park. The name says it all. I am one of the many people who volunteers at the Den to keep the trails in good condition and I often work alone. One spring morning a few years ago, I started out early from an almost empty camp site with my double bit axe to cut some dead fall from the trail. I was only a quarter mile or so in when I spotted what I thought was a very large Chow dog. I thought it was a Chow because of his huge red mane. I thought it curious he was down here by himself so I continued on ahead. When he heard me he put his paw on a tree and stood up to look me in the eye from about 75 feet. My mind raced, OH WOW, that’s not a dog! It was a bear, my guess around 300 pounds, not the biggest one I have seen but the closest.
He looked me over a few seconds and ran off into the woods. Later my wife and I followed this drainage up into the woods the way he had ran. This is where we placed the cache. There are many places here a bear could hide, and maybe hibernate. Once you find the cache if you continue up the drainage to the west you will come up on a beautiful, seasonal waterfall.
This cache was formally Yellow Rock Toy Box. We moved and renamed it to lessen the impact on the area. The best way to approach the cache is from the gate at Fossil Flats trail head. Take the first drainage up hill. This will be a difficult cache to get to as it has no marked trail and there is much scrambling over large boulders and deep cracks one could slip into. I would not recommend this for small children. You are looking for a medium size ammo can.
