Just off Route 27 north of Kingfield.
The Carrabassett River, which is really more of a mountain stream, begins around Caribou Pond and joins snowmelt and runoff from Sugarloaf. Farther down it is joined by Huston Brook which carries the runoff from the Bigelow Range. It eventually joins the Kennebec River.
Everytime we drive to Kingfield I have noticed this pulloff beside the river and wondered if it would be a good place for a cache. Today we stopped. A nice big parking place, could probably get several cars in there, tons of trash. So we did CITO and it looked a lot better. The trails to the river were very steep near the south side, but where I placed the cache (small Lock and Lock) takes you to more gentle and very short declines. There is also a brook that joins the river here. All in all a nice wooded, peaceful place, if you don't listen to the traffic on Route 27! Bring a sandwich or a cup of coffee, sit on a rock and enjoy.
