This cache is placed near Chute Creek.
First known as Lequime Creek, its name was officially changed to Chute Creek in December, 1955. The original name was after Eli Lequime, a Frenchman who spent seven years at sea before deserting his ship to go to the California goldfields in 1852. He then served a stint in the Crimean War, returning to San Francisco in 1856 and marrying a French girl. The Lequimes then came to BC in 1858 settling at Strawberry Island, halfway between Hope and Yale. In 1860 Eli walked the Hope Trail to Rock Creek where he remained until October 1861. He then walked on to Okanagan Mission where he became a successful storekeeper, cattle rancher, and sawmill operator.
This Back Roads (BR) cache is placed along the 20 kms of back roads from Naramata to Kelowna. Enter the road from the south at N 49 39.631 W 119 36.357. Continue along Chute Lake Road and the KVR until you turn onto the Forestry Road at N 49 45.375 W 119 27.045. Then enter Kelowna's Mission area at N 49 47.326 W 119 30.034. These roads are not maintained on a regular basis and the road conditions can vary from smooth to bumpy. When we placed the cache the KVR was in great shape, the forestry road was a little rough and pretty dusty. There are some narrow stretches where you might have to give way to oncoming vehicles or to some cows – this is open grazing land. Drive slowly and enjoy the views.
