Going to the Beach?

Having been born and raised in Australia, I grew up in the beach culture. A day of fun was spent body-surfing the waves at the local beach. Having now lived here in Minnesota for a number of years, I have missed that aspect of my home country. Yet, here in Minnesota we have the "Anoka Sand Plain" which in this Skijor Trails Area, can be seen close up. Unlike many of the man made beaches you might visit in the area where the sand is relatively coarse and gritty, here you will experience much of what I did when I was growing up and going to the beach: sand that is fine in structure.

That was the inspiration for the cache title. As you walk from one waypoint to the next think of the sand beneath your feet. While not overly strenuous, (younger children should be able to complete it) the sand's fine structure will give your legs a little workout in some spots. Maybe by the end of it you will want to visit the other beach at Bunker Hills, and catch a wave in their wave pool.

The cache stages lend themselves to a run or jog, so I will happily post record times for completing the cache from the first co-ordinate to the final - so you fitness junkies have some fun.

The area is also a cross country ski trail area, and it should be possible to complete the cache (except for the first clue and the final) on your skis. Share your experience if you choose to do it this way. Contact Bunker Hills Regional Park for further details.

The Cache

The cache is at the co-ordinates posted for the cache. The cache however is locked with a combination lock. The instructions for how to get the combination comprise the puzzle element of this cache.

The cache container is a large metal travel trunk. PrincessAnnika, and PrincessEila have provided quite a few of their personal collection of stuffed animals (believe me they have a collection) to start out the stash. Therefore, the Cache is intended to be kid friendly. Being large it is a great place to drop some larger size items that normally wouldn't fit into a regular cache. Always remember that caching should be family friendly, so keep that in mind when leaving something in the cache.

Also, in the cache for the first, second and third to find group, are some Australian coins. There is a $1, 50c, and 10c, as well as some tokens to a popular children's pizza and party establishment.

The cache also has a album to file your 'calling cards'. Take a look through and see who has been in the area.

Also there is a traveling bug and geocoin container, inside of which is a separate log book, to note if you took or left a TB or GC. Please use it.

The Clues:

Clue 1
Start at 45° 12.513'N 93° 17.799'W where you will find a structure. Find the serial number (xxxxx-xx). The first digit of the serial number = A

Clue 2
Proceed to 45° 12.478'N 93° 17.651'W where you will find a sign with an arrow. Underneath is a single word. Look carefully at the direction the arrow points. The letter at the end of the word the arrow points towards = B

Clue 3
Proceed to 45° 12.112'N 93° 17.703'W where you will find a sign with a map of the area. Find “where you are” and immediately underneath you will see a number. The first digit of the number = C

Clue 4
Proceed to 45° 11.962'N 93° 17.747'W where you will find a sign. Although this sign looks like it has no writing on it, be assured that it does. Carefully, locate the 14th last letter written on the sign. Now, in the alphabet, the letter that comes two letters before this letter - the 14th last letter = D

example: if the 14th last letter on the sign were 'Z', two letters before 'Z' in the alphabet is 'X'

Clue 5
Proceed to 45° 12.046'N 93° 17.741'W where you will find a sign. The third last letter of the one word of this sign = E

You're Done!
Now with all the information you need, you can proceed to the cache.

The combination to the lock is as follows:

F=C+A

Combination = BDEF
