Geocache Description:

Parking and trailhead co-ordinates provided.

Congratulations MIKE/KATH for being the "First To Find"

The Journey

Welcome to Newberry Park. There are many routes to access this cache but using the trail at the north east corner of the parking lot will avoid most of the muggles and allow you to experience the full restoration of the north section of this park. From the trail head the cache is less than 400 meters away. Bush-whacking is not required since the cache is less than 10 meters from the trail.

The Restoration

On April 14 2008, Richmond Hill Town Council agreed to implement the “Newberry Park Wetland Restoration Project”. Newberry Park, which is on a tributary of the Rouge River, had numerous groundwater problems and safety issues as a result. An Environmental Assessment called for removing the existing soccer field and baseball diamond in order to ecologically enhance the north portion of the park to promote the establishment of a wetland similar to the one that historically existed on the site.

“If you build it they will come”. Unlike the movie, in this case the baseball diamond was demolished in favour of several ponds. These ponds are now the habitat for many species of birds. The bridge in the centre of the park divides the two former recreational areas. The baseball diamond was in the north east corner of the park. A small island at the north end of the pond is located in approximately the same location that the pitcher’s mound once stood. Another nearby geocache, “Diamond Path”, was named because of its proximity to the baseball field.

A soccer field was positioned west of where the central bridge is now located. This site is now covered by several ponds. A careful search along the tree line on the west will reveal the foundation for the former soccer field bleacher. Take a stroll to the central bridge to see the full extent of the restoration project.

The purpose of the project was to transform the north portion of Newberry Park into a habitat for amphibians and other wildlife, a spawning area for fish, offer flood protection, and create an area for hiking, bird watching and other nature-related activities. The two bridges were added as part of the restoration project. Tree and aquatic plantings by local schools and members of the community provided further enhancement to the wetland restoration.

The Cache

The cache is a camo taped 1 liter Lock N’ Lock style container capable of holding several items. Please return it to its original location. The park contains a splash pad and is located next to a school. Stealth is required as many muggles may be about. Cyclists and joggers will also use the path you will follow so be on the lookout.
