In 1993 the University Council declared Msinsi Reserve to be a nature reserve in perpetuity. This Reserve comprises seven hectares of grassland and regenerating forest. A considerable impact has been made on the removal of invasive aliens from the Msinsi Reserve. Some of the more frequent invasive alien plants were Lantana and Cardiospermum (Balloon Vine).
Work parties, with members of the Durban Branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), meet on the second Saturday of every month at 13h30. On the third Tuesday of each month, aliens are removed from 14h00. A bird list in excess of 100 species has been drawn up. Records of sightings are forwarded to Ron Uken or Rob Jamieson. Mongooses are frequently spotted and a blue duiker was recently observed.
For more details about visiting the reserve, contact Dr Ron Uken (uken@ukzn.ac.za) on (031) 260 1613. To volunteer for assistance with invasive alien plant removal, contact Rob Jamieson (Tel: 031 267 0872).
