Benzonia, a small village in Benzie Co. Michigan, was settled in 1858 by a group of colonists led by the Rev. Charles E. Bailey from Oberlin, Ohio. In 1863 a college was established and became Benzonia College, later becoming an academy until it closed in 1918. Benzonia was the boyhood home of Bruce Catton, the Civil War historian, whose father was a teacher and principal at the Benzonia Academy.
The Benzie Area Historical Society is located in Benzonia in an historic church building. The museum has an interesting collection of artifacts and is a great place to visit with free admission right off of US 31. The Betsie Valley Trail for biking and hiking runs through Benzonia and the Betsie River is enjoyed by canoeists and kayakers. In late summer and early fall, the salmon run excites fishermen who come from all over finding many access points to the Betsie in Benzonia.
