Geocache Description:

You’re looking for a small camouflaged plastic pill bottle. Please bring a pen to sign the log.

The planes were flying over about every 15 minutes this evening. It was getting dark as I worked at my task.

As I worked the hair stood up on the back of my neck and the area became very quiet and still. I no longer heard the sound of the planes. The sound of the birds and other critters had also stopped. Then slowly I began to feel as if someone was watching me.

I slowly turned and saw an old woman standing behind me watching what I was doing. She looked to be about 70 years old and had a very peaceful expression on her face.

I said hello, and she asked me what I was doing. As I explained, she smiled and said “It’s so nice to have people coming back to the old neighborhood.” She said that she liked visiting with the new people in the neighborhood. She went on to explain that the house she lives in stands where we were talking.

I commented that there were no homes left here any longer, and she just smiled. She started to talk about the homes and families that live here. She talked of new babies being born, marriages and Christmas trees with presents around the tree. She talked of small children with the wonder of Christmas magic in their eyes. She talked about all the family events that had taken place and were taking place in her home. All the while she was always talking in the present tense, not the past.

We talked for what seemed like several hours. Toward the end I asked her how old she was since she remembered things that I had only read about. She answered that she was 178 years old. I smiled, and told her that she did not look older than 70 or 72. She smiled at me and thanked me.

I turned to finish placing the cache. When I turned back to finish talking to her she was gone. I looked across the empty field and did not see her anywhere. I looked in all the directions she could have gone and she was no where to be seen.

As I looked for her the sound of the planes and the animals had returned. I realized that what seemed like hours passing by had only been a few minutes. As I walked back to the car thinking about what had happened I wondered, had she been a spirit that still lived here where her house once stood?

I had an odd feeling as I was walking back across the field to the car. I stopped and looked back where I was talking with her and I saw her standing there waving as if to say good-bye. Then she was gone again. It must be the evening twilight playing tricks on mind.

Happy hunting!
