Skookum is the Chinnook word for Big Foot.
A serene lake nestled in the shadow of Thunder Mountain. Skookum
Lake is four acres in size and contains trout (I can confirm this
having seen several take flies from the surface and had a visual
sighting of a pan size beauty from a log).
You can get here by taking the Thunder Mountain Trail or the Baty
Butte Trail. I came in the Baty Butte way.
The Baty trailhead has my geocache, GC1VHDV Lost Creek Meadow, at
the very start. There are two trails to the right as you proceed
towards Baty Butte. As you descend the east flank of Baty you come
to an old forest road that has been pitted to discourage traffic,
GC1YQ8T Napping Penguin is located here. Stay on the road going
east and watch for a faint road on your right marked with trail
tape and a yellow trail sign, GC1XNJZ Wildflower Road is located at
this junction
Continue on this road for a while until you come to my cache,
GC1VHDC Skeeter, the trail turns off of the old road just a few
feet past the cache and is marked with trail ribbons. The path is
very faint in places, just keep a good bearing to the trail
junction at GC1XNHQ and keep in mind that the sawn logs are a good
indication that you are on the trail. There are a few boggy spots
where you cannot see the trail, just stay at the same elevation and
look for the trail on the other side.
At the junction with Thunder Mountain Trail, marked by GC1XNHQ DID
I JUST SEE BIGFOOT, turn left and proceed to Skookum Lake. Trail is
clear most of the way with a lot of downed brush once you see the
lake.
There is a carving of Skookum for the FTF prize.
I also left a cache of supplies with the cache for use when I have
my Geocamping Event, please leave them there!
Don't forget your mosquito netting and Deet!
