We'd always wondered about this flag on our regular outings to Elk Island NP, so we decided to make a stop on a beautiful summer afternoon to find out.
The nearby historic site marks where East Clover Bar School once stood. As we checked out the site, we could hear snapping and cracking coming from the bushes around the site. We thought it was grasshoppers but we couldn't see any when we took a closer look.
The snapping and cracking was everywhere.
But what was making this noise!?
We looked closer and saw all kinds of insects...ladybugs, aphids, grasshoppers...
Grasshoppers?
No...not the grasshoppers.
Then, "Snap!"
One of the dried beans burst before our eyes!
It's the beans! Weird! But cool!
We had to share this experience and what better way than to place a cache?
The foliage around the historic site and ground zero is the Siberian Pea Tree. The pea-like foliage (or bean-like even!) is bright green in the summer and yellowish green in the fall.
The 2" pod, maturing in late summer, makes a crackling, popping sound as it opens.
It was the beginning of August when we placed this cache and the beans were popping! Depending on the time of year you visit, will determine the additional fun in seeking out this cache.
The beans literally explode before your eyes!
Have fun!
