(SNC
Watershed)
SNC is an
environmental organization that works closely with its member
municipalities, government, individual landowners and various
community groups to maintain and improve the natural resources
within its watershed. SNC works with its partners to ensure that
the SNC watershed has healthy, accessible forests and recreational
areas, abundant fish and wildlife, natural shorelines and enough
clean water for now and for the future.
In order to
ensure and improve the continued health of the watershed,
SNC:
- Plants
thousands of trees for landowners to help filter pollution, clean
our water, and prevent soil loss
- Maintains and improves 8000 hectares of public forests
- Operates seven parks and conservation areas as well as trails,
boat launches, and canoe routes for the enjoyment of the
public
- Ensures that development, including new housing, is
environmentally responsible and does not endanger lives
- Monitors the quality and quantity of water resources and tracks
long-term changes to ensure a safe supply of clean water
- Physically removes environmental and navigational hazards from
the river
- operates water control structures to moderate river flow and
prevent flooding
- Improves the fisheries and fish habitat of the South Nation so
our fish species do not disappear.
Species at risk
biologists at SNC are conducting a rare turtle study within the
South Nation watershed, maintaining information on 6 species of
turtle (snapping turtle is included, but painted turtle is not). If
you see a turtle in your travels that might be at risk, you are
encouraged to snap a picture of it (and GPS coordinates if
possible) and to contact the SAR biologists at SNC.
More
information regarding the turtle study can be found at: (English

Office
tours are also available upon request by the friendly staff at
South Nation.
When opening
the cache, please turn it “upside down” for opening or
closing. This will reduce the possibility of lost items. The cache
container is quite large, so there is lots of opportunity for
trades! Since SNC is an environmental organization, they encourage
trades to be environmentally themed.
Congratulations to Laddy, Model12, and
Blort for being the first three cachers to find. Enjoy your prize
packages!
