A nice easy cache at Balaena Bay on the way around to Evans Bay and Kilbirnie
Balaena Bay used to be the leading area for boat building in Wellington in the early 1900’s, with the messy yards not wanted cluttering up the waterfront elsewhere. It was cheaper to have a boat built in Auckland than shipping the Kauri to Wellington, but local boat builders were kept busy as their skills were needed to adapt Auckland pleasure craft to the rougher local conditions. Many of the Island Bay fishing fleet were built here in the 1920’s.
Today it is a popular beach for sun bathers and swimmers during the summer; it is quite sheltered from the northerly.
It is also my favorite kayak launching spot for a paddle around Point Halswell to Seatoun.
The cache is a 200ml container.
Please ensure that you replace it exactly where and how you found it so that it doesn’t go missing. No spoilers or photographs of the cache location in your logs please.
