Information
The massive plutonic rocks of the Thaya Granite have solidified within the earth's crust in 10 to 12 kilometers of depth, some 570 to 600 millions of years ago.
Due to erosion of theoverlying rocks they are now outcropping at the earth's surface. Unloading of the overlying rock masses as well as tectonic forces resulted in horizontal and vertical fracturing of the granites.
Along these fractures survace weathering processes like leaching and mechanical erosion by water and wind could take place, shaping the angular rock bodies into roundish blocks (called "woolsacks"). This type of weathering is called "corestone weathering". Such rock figures, known here as "Kogelsteine" and "Fehhaube", show also other standard forms of granitic weathering, like pseudokarren, rock basins and pans of exfoliation forms.
Apart from the typically acidic rocks of the Waldviertel region, such as Thaya granite, Weitersfeld pencil gneiss, Bitter gneiss, and quartzite, alkaline rocks such as limestone silicate and marble can be found, as well as schist.
Tasks
The Kogelsteine and Fehhaube got their names because of their looks. These two are the most famous of the group, but also the other ones have names.

Aufgaben
Die Kogelsteine und die Fehhaube haben ihren Namen aufgrund ihres Aussehens bekommen. Diese sind die zwei bekanntesten der Gruppe, aber auch andere bekamen Namen.
Aufgabe 1: Sende die Antworten per Message über die Profiladresse.
Schautafel Steinerne Zeugen:
1 - Maissau durchzieht ein schwarz gestrichelter Strich auf der Tafel, was bedeutet das?
2 - Suche deinen Standort: Welches Gestein zeigt sich hier lt. Tafel?
3 - Wie sind die Namen der anderen Formationen, nenne zwei.
4 - Finde den Kogelstein mit den Namen "Wächter". Wie hoch schätzt du ihn?
Aufgabe 2: Für dein On-line-Log: Welche Formation gefällt dir am besten? Warum? Mache ein Foto und lade es zu deinem Log.
Es ist dabei egal, ob du selbst, deine Nase, dein Schatten oder dein Haustier mit auf dem Foto sind, Fotos werden doppelt belohnt: ihr braucht die Fragen bei Punkt 3 nicht zu beantworten. Beim Upload des Fotos darf gleich nach Absenden der Antworten geloggt werden, ohne auf meine Rückmail zu warten.
