Geocache Description:

A segment of camoed PVC pipe containing log book and pencils. Room only for a bit of tradeable "clip art."

So there I was, meandering along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, when I happened to glance up towards the sound of a small plane cruising above the peaks ahead of me. There had recently been a small plane crash over in that direction, and that was in my thoughts.

But then I noticed that there were two slow moving white objects ... a tow plane and a glider. And, as I watched enviously, the two spots separated as the glider was released and began a gradual spiral. The tow plane banked a bit and seemed to be heading back towards the airport.

As I observed, the glider passed over the top peak of our "ridge of caches" and drifted a bit down the Green Canyon side. The momentary thought came to me that this guy must be taking a short cut up to the topmost cache, but this thought was a fleeting one.

However, as I watched, I became aware of another white, drifting shape ... another glider. And then there were three. Was I seeing things? Four. Then five, all wheeling and banking exactly like a flock of gulls ... or vultures. One, then two more could be seen a bit further north. I was captivated.

Riding the updrafts of the warm summer day near the canyon mouth, the whirling shapes gradually drifted north until they were out of my sight.

How the heck did seven ... or more ... gliders get up there at the same time. Did the one tow plane take them up one at a time, trusting the uplifting air currents to keep them aloft, until all could sail together? Did the latter ones get a discount on tow rates?

Anyway, I was inspired. There needed to be a cache placed in recognition of this awe inspiring event.

And, on the way to an auspicious site, I waded through a maelstrom of hopper grassers.

Thus the name, in case you wondered.

Hearty CONGRATS! to dlernstrom for the FTF. You probably didn't witness the gliders when you were there ... in the middle of the night. How about meteorites?
