Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches reflecting Oconto County History. Please respect the delicate nature of the surroundings, being careful not to damage vegetation and items that may be of historical significance. Reports of such nature will result in the archiving of these caches.

The Cathedral of Pines received its name in the early 1900's from Lucy Holt, wife of Holt Lumber Company president, W.A. Holt. It was preserved by the Holt family until sold to the U.S. Forest Service in 1968. The centerpiece of the woods is a stand of white and red virgin pine, some of the last remaining in Oconto County. Because of these trees, the Cathedral of Pines is one of the only places in Oconto County where a visitor can develop a clear understanding of what the early lumberjacks saw, and begin to imagine the forests of the pine logging era. It is located off Archibald Lake Road on Cathedral Drive. A trail leads not only past many of these stately, majestic pines but also past a heron rookery and, in late July and early August, you can hear the young in their nests clammering for food and watch the parents coming and going.

“Well, it was part of this green uncut woods that was about a half mile from the lake, and it was just primarily covered with white and Norway pines, and all pines. And it was so thick that there was no underbrush…so you could see quite a long ways under these big trees. And one Sunday afternoon, my mother, who always insisted that we have a Sunday school, said, ‘Let’s go over to the woods and have the Sunday school over there.’ So we did, and while we were sitting there everyone happened to be quiet, and Mom said, ‘Listen!’ She said, ‘It sounds just like a cathedral!’ And that’s the way it was named. But we never logged it-we just took whatever trees died.” -Don Holt

The cache is an ammo box. Because of the tall tree canopy, weak satellite signals may result...be patient and ye shall find it. The Cathedral of Pines may/may not be accessible by car in the winter depending on snow conditions...the cache could be a difficult one too as it is not winter-friendly.
