El
Nicho

Cuba is the biggest island of
the Carribean Sea. It is part of the Carribean Plate
which drifts with a speed of
2cm per year away from Europe.
The ground at "El nicho" was
developed during the intersection between the Jurassic and the
Chalk which are
parts of the Mesozoicum. The
ground has an age of about 145 million years.
This coral reef comunity
is the youngest formation of the island. You still can see the
typical corals everywhere.
Rising processes in the eastern
part of Cuba indicatet the
development of terasses and tear-off edges (los nichos) by the
waves.
Such "nichos" are visibe in
this Natural Park.
Today the water still runs over
this edges and builds beautiful waterfalls.
You can follow a path and visit
the different falls and even swim in the natural pools.
